This week I finalized my lesson at MCTC it was very exciting because I got to look at the final outcome of the project. in all three classes I ran the same format which was a heavy critique day. I focused my energy in having the student run the critique, the outcome was great and the conversation was even better in both sections. Sam and I began the class by explaining how the day was going to run and since it was my last day at MCTC she encouraged the students to ask as many question as possible during the critique, we had a few people who have not mounted their work so we gave them extra time to do so. After they were done we went out to the common area and hung their work. We started of the conversation however as soon as the student began commenting on the work Sam and I backed away from the conversation, occasionally shifting the conversation to areas that were not being discussed or to present questions that they were not discussing. The critique took us a little longer than expected in all of the classes, however it was a very rewarding experience. Since we were almost out of time we ended the class with Sam explaining what they had to do for their final project and I just quickly thanked them for allowing me to share their classroom. Afterwards a few students stayed behind to have a quick conversation with me which I though was cool and they also expressed how much they liked the project. It was rewarding to know that the class had liked the project.

This week I aided Hannah in a different class as the quarter changed. The class I am at now is portfolio preparation class, which consist of mostly seniors and all new faces to me. Hannah started off the class by introducing me to the class, I introduced myself and gave them a brief overview of myself and the type of work I do. After my intro Hannah explain the structure of the class to student which mostly consisted of creating personal branding, resume and website. The class was slow since it was the first day although the students had a lot of energy and were very talkative, as they had classes with Hannah before. For the day I just sat down to the side as there was not a whole lot for me to do.

In contrast to my week at Perpich MCTC was very busy I was going to be teaching the second half of my lesson for the illustrator class. On Monday for intro to graphic design Sam begun the class by introducing the final assignment which consisted of an infographic about a topic of their choosing. After the we had one on one conversations with the student about grade and their idea for the project Sam invited me to sit in for the conversation and I suggested topics and offered some feedback on their ideas. For the both illustrator class I had the same lesson I by having a small show and tell of the process the students had which I was very impressed by the quality and the time they devoted to the project, I gave some feedback from the student who had doubts about their design. After our small critique I introduced the second part of the project which was a box and billboard mock up that utilized elements from their cover design, I gave a quick demo on how to create the mock ups and alternative software to crate mock ups like Live Surface which is a mock up creation tool, after the demo we assigned work time and Sam and I had one on one discussion with their students on their cover and their ideas for the billboard. It was awesome to see the amount of work the students put in to the project I created and it was rewarding to see that they actually enjoyed working on it.

This week we had our spring break at MCAD which allowed me to spend a few more hours at my placements. This week I also started my lesson at MCTC I am teaching a three-week lesson ending on March 29th. I am teaching both Illustrator sections, the lesson consist of creating a cover illustration for cross cultural cereal brand. This lesson also includes the use of I Pads as means of a sketching tool, utilizing the adobe application on the i Pads students will utilize their creative could accounts import assets to illustrator.

First, I gave a presentation on my work to the class and I talked about my creative process. I followed by introducing the mock client and the creative brief, after that I introduce some terminology relating to the subject matter witch in this case was Mexican wrestling. The first day of the lesson was dedicated to research and positioning of their product as both Samantha and I wanted the lesson to give the students a brief idea on how a product is developed. Part of the lesson required the students to get in small groups with people they had never shared work with and discuss their findings, in efforts of creating connection with in the students. The Lesson went on great, My lesson at Perpich really helped my approach to this lesson and it gave me an insight on what is like to facilitate a lesson.

I gave the same lesson on the on the Thursday section of illustrator the was a bit easier because I had already done once. Teaching the same lesson twice was very interesting because the atmosphere in the two sections was very different both pleasant but the group was different. I am very excited on the upcoming lessons and I am exited t se the final projects by the students.

Today I taught my first lesson to the class. The lesson was on Photoshop color correction as that is the section they were on. First, since the class is usually conducted from the back of the room, I started off by going to the front of the room and introducing myself  to the students and talk about the lesson. I proceed to ask a few question to the students about color correction. After that I went to my station in the back of the room to begin with the lesson.

The previous week I had emailed Hannah a folder with all the necessary files for the students to work with. I prepared three different ways of doing color correction along with different photos that required correction. I began with a review of basic terms relating to color and color correction and an overview of the tools needed on Photoshop for the lesson. The students where engaged and following along to the lesson every so often I stopped and asked if anyone had any questions throughout the lesson there were a few question which I addressed. At the end of each section within the lesson I quickly reviewed terms and steps. Everything went well with the lesson the only problem I encountered was that my outline was a bit crowded so at times when I lost my train of thought I had a hard time following my own outline, this was a learning experience for me as it was the first time I had done this. Over I believe that it was a great experience and tried my best to create a lesson that the students could further utilize in their project.

This week I had no class as president’s day fall on the day all do all my classes. So this week I took it as a planning week, I started doing research and planning for my upcoming lesson at Perpich, I will be going over how to color correct images as they are starting a Photoshop section in the class. Both Hannah an I deemed this to be appropriate as it would give them tools to use in their upcoming projects. I have also begun to look at what type of project I want to assign for my second experience, as I am now a TA in two classes at MCTC. Originally I was going to do lesson for their intro to graphic design class, but the opportunity was given to me to also teach a lesson in their illustrator class which I gladly accepted. I am excited and a little bit nervous for my upcoming lesson and I am extremely thankful at both Perpich and MCTC for allowing me to share their space.

This Monday I brought some Samples of my work as Hannah and I discussed I arrived few minutes early to set up my work on one of the table, as students walked in Hannah informed the students that I had brought in work and they gathered around the table to look at the samples. After a few minutes Hannah facilitated the conversation by asking me a few questions, after that some of the students proceeded to ask question about the work I explain a bit about the process and the contents of the work. After that the students had time to work on their projects as they all don’t have the creative clouds on their own computers. I floated round in to provide assistance while they students had work time.

This week at MCTC Sam began the class by reviewing a study guide that she had assigned the students. I sat down and  watched Sam interact with the students. Once the class was done reviewing the study guide Sam introduce their next assignment, after that Sam gathered the student in a circle and proceed to explain the students to swap work with someone else and we were students proceed to critique the work they had. Some of the students had not exchanged work so Samantha ask me if I would critique their work , I touched on three good thing and three bad things. After the critique was over Sam assigned worktime some students took off as they had that option available but some stayed as they needed further assistance. I proceed to help the students who stayed back. Over all it was another good week I am getting excited as start planning my lesson for both my practicum experiences.

The semester is moving along and I am adjusting to my schedule nicely. This week has been hectic yet productive, things Perpich are starting to get more active. At the beginning of class Hannah handed out a quiz for the students on design terminology, meanwhile  Hannah ask me if i could help her lay out some design samples she brought in for the students to look at, after we did that the students got up to look at the and ask any questions about the samples. Hannah explained where the samples were from and a bit about the process. This week the students were introduce to their first assignment the class goes fairly fast and since it’s only an hour and twenty minutes long , some work time was assigned to the students and I got to interact with some of them I can tell there are still adjusting to me being in the classroom at the end of class Hannah asked if it would be OK with me to bring in some samples of my work so that students would see what kind of project I work. This week at MCTC we had a class critique of  the first project they were assigned the project consisted of arranging and working with type. At the beginning of class Samantha and I talked about how the critique was going to be set up and asked me to facilitate conversation if the group was quiet as she was not sure how they would react to the critique since it was the first in class critique. The critique went exceptionally well the students had a lot to say and I admit that I was surprised that a beginning class was so active. I had a chance to pick a piece of work and give a critique on it. Over all it was another successful week I feel more comfortable with the environment and I can tell the students are getting used to my presence.

Week 3 - Jan 30 2017 (Week 3, 1/30-2/03)

Jeremy Lundquist Shadowing print making class at Perpich center for art education - 1 hours 40 minutes

Samantha Sather intro to graphic design at Minneapolis Community and Technical College- 3 hours and 45 minutes

This week was my first time at Perpich Center for the Arts, the staff was very welcoming I serve as teacher assistant for intro graphic design with Hannah Johnson and I shadowed a Printmaking class with Jeremy Lund. Over all it was great experience. since it was the first day for student as they were returning from end of term class was slow. Hannah introduced me to the class and explained to them that I was going to be there for the next few months after that she preceded with a PowerPoint on the elements of design.  At Jeremy's class I showed and observed how he went about teaching, the class has a casual set up since it’s a studio class.

This was my second week at MCTC I arrived early to catch up with Sam on how the class was set up for the day, Sam gave an introduction to InDesign after that she precede to assign a project involving typography, the task was to use different fonts in order to explore type. During lab time I assisted the students with whatever they were having difficulties with. Student were very open to ask for help, some were very eager to move at faster paced and asked more advance question which I hesitated to answer because I did not want to interfere with the class so I explained to those students that it was best to learn the slow path rather than taking shortcuts especially at a beginner level.

All of the students are very appreciative and polite and some approached me to see if they could get feedback on the project. Overall I had a very positive experience, classes are still at an early stage and  things are just starting to pick up, I anticipate that the placements will get more dynamic in the coming weeks.

Week 2 - Jan 23 2017 (Week 2, 1/23-1/27)

Samantha Sather intro to graphic design at Minneapolis Community and Technical College- 3 hours and 45 minutes

I am excited to say that this semester I will be completing residencies Perpich Center for Arts Education, and the Minneapolis Community and Technical College. This was my first week staring my teaching artist experience, I was only schedule to attend Minneapolis community and technical college this week Due to the fact that Perpich art high school does not have class on this day do to a show installation in process.

I was welcomed very warmly by Samantha Sather at MCTC as she was my former professor, it was great to be back where I had initiated my journey as a designer. Samantha and I had a brief conversation about the class set up as I was already familiar being a former student, we discuss possibilities for my future lesson plan. She began her class by introducing me ,since the class is a studio class the first hour and a half are dedicated to lecture, I sat and took notes as Sam lectured. When lab time rolled around Sam reminded the student that if they had any question they could ask me as well. she instructed me to float around the room and keep an eye on student who might be struggling with the assignment.

the students were quick to approach me to ask for help. I helped a man that is 70 years old and was interested in design however he had troubles with technical aspects, I spent time with him working and solving problems I could sense the frustration in him so I tried to create solutions that were tailored to his needs.  The diversity in the classroom is a very rewarding experience, I truly enjoyed work with people from so many background. Over all my first day was a very fulfilling experience
