Week 17 - April 28 - May 4

Week 17 - April 28 - May 4

I always dreamed of becoming a teacher. I admire the profession of teaching because it motivated and inspired me as a child and now as an artist too. I feel like teachers are like science. They present a problem and give core ideas then let students discover their own answers like scientists or researchers. As a child, I always wondered how much knowledge the teacher has that they are able to teach me the unknown things (to a child). They were still able to teach me or I still had things to learn as I was a high schooler, who knew what was right and wrong for myself. And now as a young adult, I still admire educators who may be a bit more than I used to. They have incredible skills that they can relate to every single person in the world and can guide you no matter what. Isn’t that blow your mind?

I have taught multiple people in different parts of the world. I do call myself an educator or teaching artist based on my academic qualification but teaching taught me to be a student again. It taught me to learn, listen, and experience. Even though I was the teacher in the room during the lessons, I was a student too. And I think that is why teachers are able to understand and connect with every single person because they put themselves in the position of other people.

I get inspired by the protection more as I work and experience. I am very grateful to be in the world which is exploring definition teaching. We do not only consider school teachers and professors as educators but also teaching artists, instructors, and parents are educators too. I think every single person is a teacher because we all are learning new things every day as a student.

Thank you so much to all the teachers and professor in my life, who have supported and still supporting me. Thank you for much for making me fall in love with education. I hope one day I will be able to inspire people too.

Week 16 - April 21 - 27

Week 16 - April 21 - 27

The week was really productive mainly because final assignments are due in the next couple of weeks. I worked on watercolor paintings and please with the outcome. I am planning to work on them next week.

I worked on an accordion book lesson plan and also shoot the lesson videos. It was an interesting process. I always wanted to make videos of my process and teaching and the current situation gave me the reason to actually take actions to the goal. Currently, the best way to reach people is by digital means. So, creating the video help me to understand the Video world. There are so many little things that go into creating a video that we do not consider while actually teaching. Things like setting the camera, angels, world limit, appropriate and easy to understand sentence structure, the life on the lesson ( because it going to in the world for ages), interaction with invisible people. I was new to all these factors but the process and then the satisfaction of creating the video is wonderful. The plus points of creating the video like a wider range of audience and permanence of the lesson make it worth it. I am not good at making videos and limited accessibility of the needed equipment and assistance made it more difficult for me to create a video. But I think this is a start and I am going to keep making them and learn from my mistakes.

I had a conversation about the lesson with other teaching artists in my class which helped me to understand other’s thoughts about the digital mediums. We are painters and very hands-on artists which makes it hard to connect with the screen. But it was helpful to know that I was not the only one who was feeling that. Because using video format are a whole new technique and the way of thing to learn. It helps to have support and word of confidence from fellow teaching artists. It also creates the community bond which is essential in this time of isolation and pandemic.

Stay home, create new art, watch my video, and create your own accordion book.

Week 15 - April 14 - 20

Week 15 - April 14 - 20

I am working on the lesson plan on the accordion bookmaking. I am planning to create 2 videos for the lesson. One video will be on how to make accordion books and other will be on the cover for the book and pop-ups. I have worked with accordion book format for one of my series. I was pretty confident about how to make them and why the accordion format. But when I thought about the creating a lesson plan of it my thinking process changed drastically. When I think about creating a artwork I look for materials, medium that would complement the concept. Creating a lesson plan the second step of the artwork. I analyzed what worked in the artwork and what did not in terms of book format, what did I researched about the form before making the work, what did work from from those research and what did not and what are the solutions I discover during the making process. Then I thought about what can I share from my process with others and the lesson plan started to take place.

I also worked on some watercolor landscape paintings. Painting is helping me to calm down and take my mind out of the current situation. Last week I was frustrated with everything and was not able to focus on anything. As I shared with you last week, I made a schedule for myself of every little thing that I needed to do. I included lunch, dinner, breakfast, coffee time, assignments, movie time, yoga and walk time. It kept me motivated. I am not fully energized but I am at least trying. My friends and I started to do homework on video calls, which is game changer for me.

Take care and keep smiling!

Week 14 - April 6 - 13

Week 14 - April 6 - 13

Residency 1: Unmesh Inamdar Art Academy, India

Residency 2: Children’s Residential Treatment Center (teens)

Shadowing: Shakun Maheshwari teaching artist, COMPAS

I am working on some sketches for the Senior Project course. I am using photos of my home that my parents took and drawing by referencing them.

Other than working on the sketches, I worked on some assignments for classes. In general, I did not do anything. I did not felt motivated or energetic this week. I am emotionally over whelmed and having courses online, having the same amount of work and responsibilities not helping me. It feels like I have more amount of work to do than I usually have and by thinking about it my brain just dies on me. I feel numb, almost like I am not in my body. I found myself zoning out easily in conversations, while working and even while doing daily rituals. I have started to eat less because I do not feel hungry.

I do not think it is as bad as it sounds but the situation and current changes have affected me and the symptoms are very visible for me. I am planning my next week and trying to have some schedule so I will feel motivated. Family and courses keep in some time table but it makes me feel more tired because that schedule is not designed by me. I feel I am just following what is been ordered to me. Not having the control of my own life, at least having that feeling is making me restless.

I think we all just need to find something that would keep us motivated. I am going to try to have a schedule and will see if that is enough motivation for me. Be safe, healthy and creative.

I am a Drawing and Painting major. When I heard that all classes I going to be online, I wondered how that would look for fine art majors. Seniors and most juniors have more open-ended classes because they work on their own projects. But it is hard for classes which are a foundation and technique based. The students need more attention from professors to learn the skill set.

Some professors are giving online tutorials about how to set up a studio in available space for oil painting and other needs. Because of the lockdown, people do not have access to the studios or workspaces. I really appreciate having such tutorials that talk about simple but essential things for an artist. Professors are sharing videos of themselves drawing or painting the subject matter, which is also helpful to understand the techniques for the foundation level classes. There also have been changes in assignments, which are now based on the things that are available to students at home. Like, creating still-life for drawing/ painting by using things at home or self-portraits or figure drawings. Professors are encouraging students to share the photos of in-progress work or showing the work on video calls, which allows students to critiques and professors have more insights towards student’s circumstances and progress.

Initially, I was unsure how the online system would look like and even it would work for such practice and process-based education. I am surprised by the adaptability of professors and students to provide and accept the circumstances and finding solutions for each problem. Online learning has made it accessible for students to continue their classes without missing anything. This type of learning is not the best thing for fine artists but I can see them working.

I do think online learning is not a good option for fine arts students because our work is very tactile, texture-based and dimensional, but the screen flattens everything. It is hard to get the feel, effect by looking at the work online. There is also a problem of accessibility of the materials, subject ( still life, models) during online classes.

We experience that art has been more accessible and visible than ever through versual means. I wonder if online visuality makes art more accessible or inaccessible. In the online fine art classes I wonder about the physical presence of professors and students in the class. I think this dynamic changes the equation of the class, it is easy to help students while they are working in front of the professor. It is easy for students to ask questions or clear difficulties in the physical classroom. This is my opinion it might be different for other people. For some people, online classes give them freedom than being in the structural classroom.

Online classes are working for me now because of the situation but I would prefer on campus if I had a choice.

I am planning on doing a community project with my family as an activity to do during the quarantine. We all are home with time and learning to accept the current situation with the virus. I found this period as an opportunity to call and get connected with people that I usually do not take initiative to talk to. I am a bit introvert especially when it comes to calling or talking to someone. I am still learning to start the conversation and to keep it going. I also like to see the face and body language of the person to talk to them. So, it is hard for me to call or talk to someone on call.

This week, I pushed myself and send messages to some family members. Knowing that they are worried about me and proud of me for being able to get through this virus situation alone gave me confidence. I asked them to call me even ever they are free and I would love to talk with them. Of course, I put them on the stop by asking them to call me. But this also steps for me. I think baby steps help. I got calls from my couple of family members. I am going to practice this calling project throughout my quarantine. Hopefully soon, I can just pick the phone and call someone in the family and talk to them for hours as I talk to my parents or with close friends.

I am also thinking of doing an online painting workshop and signing a workshop with family. Be safe and healthy!

I moved to my aunt’s place this week. I had to move out of my apartment because of the situation we are going through. I packed everything from my apartment and studio in one and the half-day flew to my aunt’s place. I feel a safe and comfortable environment where my family is with me.

During this time, my family, friends and I went through a lot of mental stress. Being an international student, living in a strange place without family support made it hard for me to survive in this uncertain situation. I don’t enjoy moving place to place, because I like to be comfortable and connected to things and people as they are.

I think somehow this all working for me in favor because I am currently working on a painting series called fractured. Which talks about the disorientation, moving from place to place. It talks about finding a home in the place and having to leave it of course with a choice but losing the sense of home repeatedly. I want to talk about the feeling of having broken, paused relationships with the places and people because of constant transitioning from country to country.

My current move also giving me the feeling of loosing and leaving things behind. Because I am going through the experience that I am painting I think it will justify the emotion more accurately in the work.

Be safe. Take care.

I shadowed Shakunji on Tuesday. The lessons were at Oakwood Elementary school. We worked with 4 and 5 graders. Shakunji taught Rangoli and introduce students to Indian culture. The lesson included a 2-day workshop for an hour. We did the first workshop and the second is supposed to be next week.

I wanted to learn how I teach and share my skillset which comes from my background with everyone. I wanted to learn the technicality and essence of Indian art forms. I wanted to find a balance between Indian but not appropriation.

I have learned a lot from the Shakunji. I observed that she gave time to students to experiment with rice flour to make Rangoli. I think that allowed students to use their imagination and to broaden the definition of what is art. Rangoli is a temporary art. Shakunji opened up the question of permanent and temporary in her introduction which helped students to know the outcome of the lesson. They know from the beginning that they are not going to have the final artwork. The lesson is about the process. I think to identify Rangoli it is important to be temporary. In the result-oriented world, I think the lesson was very powerful.

When I was thinking of teaching Rangoli, I wanted to figure out the way to make it permanent and that was the main reason I wanted to learn how Indian artist teaches Rangoli or folk art. Observing Shakun helped me to understand the importance of Indian folk art and it’s principals. It is significant to find the right approach to make art form as your own and easy to learn for others especially for the people who don’t have the background. Shakunji’s lesson aid me as an Indian teaching artist.

On Wednesday I went to the Children’s Residential Treatment Center. Carmen had an English lesson that day but students were allowed to work on art. They were working on a design for t-shirt printing. More students were interested in doing portraits to print on the t-shirt. It was a fun and relaxing day.

I started my second residency this week at Children’s Residential Treatment Center. I worked on Monday and Tuesday during Carmen’s class. She is an art teacher and also an English teacher. She shared assignments with me to have an idea of how the classroom works. She usually incorporates English with art in her assignments. Currently, students are working on stop motion animation.

On Monday Carmen gave the topic of self- portrait. Students have to choose a word from the vocabulary list that describes them the most and make an animation of it. Some students choose to draw self-portraits and others are still working on the animation.

Students are allowed to use the internet for inspiration. So, some of them search the quotes about the word or some search the images. I have no idea about the animation but I am helping them with the background making and sketching for the animation.

Students are also working on there 10 mins journal entries where they are creating collages, small paintings and tracing drawings. The classroom is relaxing and allows everyone to work at their own pace.

This week, my friend Anavi and I facilitated the community walks as I talked about in the Week 6 journal entry. It was an amazing experience. The walk happened on three days at different times. We walked through the MCAD for 15 minutes with a 1-minute of pause. We walked silently which allowed us to focus on other sensory experiences. It made aware of the surroundings and the own body.

We wanted to address segregation happens in the MCAD community in terms of spacial division. Most of the time comic majors do not go to the 3D shop because there is no need for them to be there. And this happens to most of the people at MCAD that they have been to some parts of MCAD for years because there was no reason to go there. The walk was mainly designed to bring people together despite their majors, titles, and backgrounds. It allowed the participant to experience MCAD as space.

The participant found the walk meditative. Some participants raised questions about their presence in the space. Not being able to interact with people because of the required silence and walking without purpose made them think about the body and spatial interaction.

As a facilitator, I found it vulnerable and uncountable mainly when we were walking in the crowd. I felt responsible for the group. It was an eye-opening experience for me. I do think everyone should take a without purpose walk in a day. The walk definitely calmed me down and refreshed me.

I excited to start my residency at the Children’s Residential Treatment Center next week.

This week I taught to people with mental illness at Task Unlimited. We had a lesson on watercolor and collage landscapes. The lesson was about creating a landscape using watercolors and collage. I think the combination of materials provides more flexibility. The last time I had a workshop at Task Unlimited we observed that people have limitations with mobility. So, I think to have options to create art allows everyone to participate.

Clients created amazing landscapes inspired by the 17th to 19th-century paintings. I shared the examples of some of the landscape paintings by artists Nicholas de Stael, J. S. Cotman, W. Heaton Cooper, Paul Cezanne, and Donald Hamilton Fraser. The examples turn out to be a good starting point for creating their own landscape paintings.

Clients mainly focused on watercolors and enjoyed doing it. Some clients did collage as the second artwork. As they started painting the landscape they had some stories to shares with others about the place in the painting. It was fun to have the conversation about the artwork which not only discusses the color and form but the thought behind the piece. I observed that everyone leave the room with conversations about their travels. I think that was the success of the lesson. Having finish products or learning new skills is the secondary outcome for me. Seeing those smiles on the client’s faces means lots to me.

I am working on a lesson plan for watercolor and collage workshop for adults with mental illness at Task Unlimited organization. We are planning to create landscapes by using color papers and watercolors. I am excited to see the results. I have worked with Task unlimited before when we made abstract watercolor paintings. Clients had lots of stories to share with their paintings which I was amazed by. I am looking forward to this workshop.

My friend Anavi Mullick and I are planning a community project at Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) as part of Art in the Community course. We are working on having silent 15 minute walks with the MCAD community. We will walk through the campus of MCAD and experience the space. The idea behind the walk is to come together as a community and forget our differences and separations while experiencing the space that brought us together.

We planed the route and worked on the poster for a community walk this week. It was fun to just walk around the campus without having to run to the classroom or studio or to grab lunch from the cafeteria. It made me realized, how many places I go on a daily bases and do not pay attention to them. There is a lot more to these places than being just a path for something. Anavi and I both are interested in maps so we drew a map of the route we will be walking on during the 15 minutes walks for the poster. I am excited to see what form these walks will take and what will be the response from the community.

I am currently working on my senior project which is coming up in 3 months. I feel it is a very short time for creating a body of work that I am satisfied with. But I am giving my best to stay positive and enjoying the process of creating art.

I intend to work in a series of 3 artworks, which are 5 feet by 3 feet. The rectangular shape for the landscape format. The medium is oil paint-  yellow, red and blueish grey. Oil paint is the traditional medium used for landscapes. Oil paint also takes time to dry out fully which represents the intensity of missing the place overtime changes. The yellow and orange colors in the painting are evocative of Haldi and Kumkum, Indian symbols of the cherishing of good things in life and, therefore, in the painting are representative of the good memories that I had in my hometown-Badlapur, India.

My goal for the senior project is to create body of the work which would represent the idea of losing the memory of Badlapur. I want the viewer to feel lonely  and  strange in the place. I am planning to create a number of artworks and might show only one piece at the end. I am not hoping to have end results as the final artwork for the Badlapur theme but to have artwork that successfully coveys the subject matter.

I went to the Residential Treatment Center to set up a schedule for the residency. It was good to get to know the environment before and to meet people before I start working there. Now, I also know my schedule so I am ready to work next from next month. I am excited about it.

I am currently working on making books for the exhibition for my coming exhibition in March. The process is slower than I expected. The painting pages, making accordion and constructing the size and shape of the book are making me think about my practice of painting from different perspectives. I was wondering how the panting and sculptures both of the things that I am most interested in could come together and books seem to be a good fit for both for now. I am enjoying making books. It is working as a meditation for me.

I went out to Minnehaha Falls this week to do some photography and to admire the beauty of falls in winter. This was my first time to see Minnehaha Falls in winter. It was mesmerizing. It was good to go out in the fresh air from the daily routine.

I flew back to Minneapolis from India this week. I took some photos from the flight for the inspiration for my own practice. I love going back and India and coming back to Minneapolis too but the journey always gets to me. I am not scared of flying but I do not enjoy the process of that. I get stressed by only looking at the tickets. I need to take 3 flights to either go back to India or come to Minneapolis which usually takes up 24 hours. I get stress by thinking of the running I have to do catch all the flights in time and the difficulties I might have to face. I am still getting used to the whole process and my feelings about that.

I am also scared of heights and earth. This is the first time in the past 4 years I have looked down enough at earth to take photos. I figured out it is a bit easy to look at earth from the mobile screen than actually looking down and panicking. These photos are my achievements for this year. I wonder always wonder about how art makes things easier to deal with. I am trying to get over my fear so can get inspire by my surroundings to create art.

Unmesh Inamdar Art Academy - Grade 1 - 12 ( 9.30 Hours )

This week was my last week with Unmesh sir’s Academy. On Wednesday morning, we made three-dimensional portraits by cutting painted portraits halfway through the face and by overlapping the cut paper. It was a bit difficult for 1 to 4 graders to cut the portrait and to glue it back together by overlapping the cut portion. So, I helped them with almost every step. It was good that not all students who did the portraits were present in the morning and so, I got to give individual attention to each student.

We made all the portraits 3-dimensional by the end of Wednesday. In the evening, students were more willing to cut their portraits because they could see the end result of portraits which we had done in the morning. Everyone was surprised to see all the portraits together. We decided to put all the portraits together on one panel to display them.

On Thursday evening, students put all the portraits together on board and stapled them to the board. We took some photos with portraits. Sir allowed us to display portraits outside of the class. While displaying it, one person walked up to us and asked us what is this? He said he came to see the portraits because it looked different from what we generally expect from kids. I felt that as a compliment. And I am so glad that Unmesh sir helped me throughout the process and supported me. The rest of the evening, students were working on the lettering of ‘Happy new year’ and drawing scenes with the theme of a grandmother telling a story.

Sunday was the last day to be in class and working with students. It was definitely an emotional day for me and for them too. Students were working on the safari theme painting in the morning. Unmesh sir is participating in the students' exhibition on Jan 19th, 2020 and the theme is the environment. So, currently, students are working on that theme.

Unmesh Inamdar Art Academy - Grade 1 - 12 ( 25.30 Hours )

I was excited to work with Unmesh Inamdar sir because they taught me drawing and painting back in India before I came to MCAD for my BFA. I started my residency on Tuesday. I only observed on the first day, because there is a difference in USA teaching and Indian teaching. Unmesh sir often draws the memory drawing (figurative scene from the imagination) on the left page as the reference for students under 9th grade to draw on the right page. While drawing outdoor scene sir drew father with a child. And he explained that this is father and son, students told sir to draw moustache to father to suggest drawn figure as the father. I found that interesting and funny that it is true that most of the Indian fathers have moustache. Students were also painting and calligraphy Christmas theme art. Some students were painting snowman with Santa Claus, Santa Claus on reindeer sleigh and face of Santa Claus. 1st to 4th graders were excited to draw Santa. They were telling stories about how Santa came into their building and they went to see Santa to the mall. I enjoyed my first day at residency mainly because they welcomed me with a Christmassy environment.

On Wednesday, grades 5 to 9 went to the garden to draw the playground theme drawing. Unfortunately, we got delayed for the lesson because of the unexpected rain but after it was fun. Unmesh sir told me to explain to students how to draw and what to draw. I explained the concepts of composition, perspective, and fast drawing, etc. It was an amazing experience. I got to guide the student throughout the lesson. Students painted the playground drawings on Thursday. Students also did calligraphy and painting on theme Happy New Year or Welcome 2020.

We did the lesson in portrait on Saturday. Students from grade 1 to 9 drew and painted portraits of friends, family or teachers from memory. I conducted the lesson and discussed light sources and proportions. We are going to create a mural next week from the portraits by installing all the faces together. My friend from my drawing and painting class came to visit Unmesh sir and to spend time in the class. It was nice to see him and his work.

On Sunday morning, Sir took the lesson on still life painting. There was eggplant, coconut, teapot and clay pot in the still life set up. Students used watercolors, poster colors, oil pastels, and crayons to paint the still life. I assisted Sir with suggesting students with coloring techniques like value and hue, shadow and light and color mixing. In the morning Sir told me to think about the lesson for 11th and 12th-grade students for an evening class. In the afternoon I showed my art to family friends which was an amazing experience because my art is a bit different from what students from India usually paint. It was helpful to hear feedback from the other side of the world.

In the evening, I gave sir some suggestions about drawing a classroom from observation for 11th and 12th-grade students. Sir also gave me information about NATA and CET (entrance exams for Indian students to apply for Architecture, Fine Art and Applied and Commercial Art Colleges) and what the exam looks like. So, we decided to give a two-dimensional design to 11th graders with the theme of classroom objects. The main object is given importance through repetition. The design is created in two-dimension with 3 to 4 objects that are around. I conducted a lesson. In the lesson, we discussed composition, scale change, repetition, overlap, and two-dimension. Students will color these designs on next Wednesday. I did not give a lesson to 12th grades because they were practicing for the NATA exam which is on January 6, 2020.

I learned a lot this week. It was a bit difficult to be in India and to teach art because the words, definitions, and requirements are a little bit different. Sir gave me responsibilities from the first day which made me feel like I am welcomed. This week definitely helped me with developing my confidence to work with children. Having 1st to 12th-grade students in the same place made me more efficient and comfortable in the space. Students also learn a lot from each other works and I got to experience that.
