Week 10

My house

This week I started to make music as a way to occupy my time. Its been a lot of fun even though I really don’t have a clue what I’m doing. It’ve been going to visit research or wildlife sanctuaries, as they have little to no people, and recording audio where I feel at peace. I’ve then been using those clips in the music I’m making and trying to emulate the mood of the place I was in. I also got one of my friends to make music with me so its been fun. I’ve also been going on bike rides and taking as may photos as I can

Week 8

Perpich Center for Arts Education -6 hours

At Perpich this week the students were learning about liquid emulsion. A student of mine asked me if it was possible to do liquid emulsion on bone, which I had never heard anyone do before. My only advice was to make sure the bone was bleached well so an image had a better chance to appear. I also talked to Lauren more about what was hard about teaching at an art-focused school and what were some of the best things. It has been a great time working with Lauren. I really enjoy the energy she brings to the classroom and all the students appreciate it as well.

Week 9

In My House 168 hours

It has been weird adjusting to online class and staying at home for most of the week. I was able to go home at the beginning of break to see my family in South Dakota, and it was great seeing them. This week I focused on making a youtube video for my students at Perpich. It was a lot of fun to make, and it gave me some motivation to get more done in the week. Avery and I have been trying to get out for some bike rides when we can but other than that, we have just been playing animal crossing.

Week 7

Perpich Center for Arts Education -6 hours

At the start of the week the students were working on polaroid transfers! I had never done the process so it was fun learning with the students how to do it. One of my students also shared that they were going to have a show at the global market, and I was hoping to atend. Later in the week, I was able to attend the group critiques for the polaroid transfers. It was fun to heard the students talk about their work in a group setting. It was also good to heard what problems and what people enjoyed about the process.

Week 6

Perpich Center for Arts Education -6 hours

After I got back from the week off, most of the students had completed their cyanotype projects. The students were required to make a print on paper as well as fabric. Some of the students were more excited about the fabric opportunity.

Week 5

This week was Presidents Day and a teacher inservice so I focused on my art! It was a friend of mines birthday this week so I kept myself busy by screen-printing a hoodie! I had never screen-printed before this but it went very well. I had a lot of good help from the shop techs in the print studio so it was very easy. I’ve been having a lot of fun trying new processes that are outside of my major, I think everyone needs to have a time they can experiment with a new process.

Week 4

Perpich Center for Arts Education -4 hours

This week at Perpich the students were focused on making cyanotypes! Before class started I took some time to go around the galleries to see what each of the students had up. It gave me a good opportunity to see all their work, and think about what other photographers would be good for them to see. We started the class on Monday by having the students do a quick critique of the pinhole photos the students had been working on last week. A lot of the students had done portraits for their pinhole projects so there was a variety of styles. Once we finished the critique I walked around and talked to the studnets about ideas that they had for the cyanotype project. Some of the students were eager to keep working on the self portraits in cyanotype, so I had a few examples to show them. One of the students was very excited about doing cyanotypes onto fabric so I instantly thought of Shane and showed the a couple of example of Shane’s work.

Week 3

Perpich Center for Arts Education - 4.5 hours

This was my first week in the classroom at Perpich Center for Arts Education. I started by introducing myself to the class and talking a little about the teaching artist minor. Then the students went around and introduced themselves to me. After that Lauren started the class by allowing someone to ask a question. The question could have been anything, it is just something that Lauren does to get the class more comfortable with each other. It is something I really enjoy as it starts the class in a very casual and open way. The class then did a quick critique on the students photograms, and I recommended some processes and artist for the students to look at. One of the students was even interested in chemigrams. After the critque the students were split into groups. One being the group that needed help loading film and operating a camera, and the other being people working on their pinhole projects. I took the time to rotate between the groups and get to learn the names and faces of the students better. I’m excited to be working with all of the students!

Minneapolis Institute of Art - 7.5 hours

This week at the MIA I had the opportunity to help with one of the Family Days! I started the day helping Akiko

Week 2

Perpich Center for Arts Education (2hr)

This week I was able to meet with Lauren Bina at Perpich Center for the Arts to discuss the schedule for this semester. I got to meet with Lauren one on one and discuss what the class would be doing over the next few weeks. It will mainly be a lot of darkroom processing and other alternative photo methods, which has me excited! Lauren gave me a brief tour through the darkroom and though the school while I was there. I had never been to Perpich before but after one visit I am pretty excited. It had been a while since I had printed in the darkroom so I took some time this weekend make a few prints.

Week 1

Minneapolis Institute of Art Victoria Myers (3.5hrs)

This week was my first week working in one of the Open Studios with Vicotria Myers! The theme for this week was papercraft. Victoria encouraged all of the participants to recreate a landscape that they had seen at the museum. Some of the participants knew what they wanted to make right away, and a few others strayed away from the prompt. The studio was never super busy but had a nice flow of people throughout the afternoon. I ended up making three prints while I was there. One of them was a photo I had taken and the other two were Ukiyo-e prints by Hokusai. It was fun working with a medium I usually don’t use, it was kind of nice to just focus on cutting shapes into the paper. While I was there I got in contact with Angela about possibly working a few of the Third Thursdays in the future as well.
