Residency- Juxtaposition Arts with Leslie and Drew - 2hrs

WINTER ORIENTATION. 1/5/19

Today was the winter orientation session for VALT, (Visual Arts Literacy Training). Leslie, Drew and I introduced ourselves to a group of 30 students and their parents about the program and what the organization does. We briefly introduced ourselves and where we went to school or are currently going to school and what our preferred medium to make art consists of. Leslie and Drew went deeper into their bio’s and talked about other schools they teach art classes at. They transitioned into talking about the history of the organization and what they provide for the youth of North Minneapolis. Since I’m still learning a lot I just listened to what the other instructors had to share. After about 30 minutes of talking and answering any questions the students and or parents might’ve had, we took the group on a tour of JUXTA’s facilities which consists of 3 different buildings placed on Emerson in North Minneapolis. Leslie and Drew went over the different workshops students can be placed in after completing the introductory drawing class. As I listen I realized what a wonderful organization/program this is for youth who are underprivileged and don’t have the means to pay for a program that allows them to be creative. To realize they could potentially be professional artists making a living off of sharing parts of themselves in a creative way.
