This week at Avivo, I again sat in on “Art and Thrive” where we had an open discussion on the business side of being a professional artist. There was lots of discussion on taxes, inventory and cost tracking, having a web presence; essentially all the logistics that go on behind the scenes of being a professional artist. I was really excited to share my input with the group since these are the topics we have been discussing in my professional practice class. After that, the open studio started and there was a lot more activity going on in comparison to last week which was exciting. I helped a member with another painting, picking out colors with him and a collective member showed me how to get a really nice glossy surface using glue! I feel like Artworks members have been teaching me new things every week and it has been really exciting.

Valentines I made for the students

Valentines I made for the students

On Thursday, I planned a small Valentine’s Day project for the students. I brought in a bunch of colored card-stock, some cutout heart stencils I made, and some extra chipboard in case they wanted to make their own stencils. The first group had a great time making valentines and I’ve included some photos, located above, of what they made, while the other group was not as interested in making valentines so they worked on their sketchbook assignments. Overall, we had a fun time and it was really interesting to see all the different approaches students took with their valentines. On Friday, I brought in valentines that I made for everyone and we had a fun day working on their sketchbook assignments and personal projects. It was a really fun Valentine’s Day and I’m excited to do more fun activities with the students.
